Product details
The US aircraft carrier CVN-65 Enterprise, known as "Big E," was for a long time the largest ship in the world and the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. It is the eighth ship to bear the name "Enterprise." With the introduction of increasingly heavier jets, the need for an enormous aircraft carrier grew. Construction of the megaship began on February 4, 1958, and it was commissioned on September 24, 1960.
The waterline measures 317 meters in length and has a height of 40.5 meters. Propulsion is provided by eight A2W pressurized water reactors and four Westinghouse steam turbines, delivering a total power of 280,000 horsepower. With this power, the carrier can travel 140,000 nautical miles at 36 knots or 400,000 nautical miles at 20 knots. The construction cost was $450 million. The Enterprise CVN-65 carries 94 aircraft, including the F-14A Tomcat, A-7E Corsair II, A-6E Intruder, S-3A Viking, EA-6B Prowler, E-2C Hawkeye, and SH-3H Sea King helicopters.
