Tamiya US Aircraft Carrier Yorktown

The model is a replica of the USS Yorktown CV-5 aircraft carrier, which was completed in 1937 as the first ship of the namesake class and the sixth aircraft carrier of the US Navy. When the Pacific War broke out, the aircraft carrier became the flagship of Task Force 17 under the command of Rear Admiral Frank J. Fletcher and conducted a series of operations throughout the Pacific. During the Battle of the Coral Sea in May 1942, the Yorktown CV-5 helped thwart the advance of the Japanese Navy towards New Guinea despite sustaining heavy damage. In the Battle of Midway, the Yorktown and her sister ships USS Enterprise and USS Hornet defeated the Japanese mobile fleet, but the Yorktown itself suffered severe damage from torpedo and bomb strikes by aircraft from the Japanese aircraft carrier Hiryu.
