The Porsche 911 GT1 was primarily designed for racing at 24-hour events starting in 1996 and was produced in very limited numbers as a street-legal sports car. Despite its model designation of 911, some enthusiasts still do not consider it a "true" 911, as it is powered by a water-cooled mid-engine rather than the traditional air-cooled rear engine. Additionally, it features a completely unique, significantly flatter body compared to the "real" 911. The Tamiya model kit replicates the flat silhouette of the 911 GT1, the 6-cylinder boxer mid-engine (with bi-turbo), and the suspension. The model also includes a realistic interior with a roll cage, and the rear panel is removable.
