The 19-year-old jazz drummer Andrew Neiman dreams of a great career. After his father's failed writing career, he is determined to fight his way through and make it to the top of the country's most prestigious music conservatory. One night, the band leader Terence Fletcher, known for his qualities as a teacher as well as his ruthless teaching methods, discovers the young drummer while he is practicing. Although Fletcher says only a few words at that moment, he ignites a burning determination in Andrew. To his surprise, the teacher arranges for the talented young man to play in his group starting the next day – a step that will change Andrew's life forever.
