Product details

It is the year 1939: Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer (Brad Pitt) embarks on a challenging journey to the Himalayas. There, he aims to become the first person in the world to conquer Nanga Parbat, one of the highest mountains in the world. At the main train station in Graz, he hastily bids farewell to his pregnant wife Ingrid (Ingeborga Dapku-Naite) and his friend Horst Immendorf (Gerardo Ebert). Upon arriving at the base camp in the Himalayas, initial difficulties arise between the egocentric Harrer, who refuses to submit to anyone, and his compatriot Peter Aufschnaiter (David Thewlis), who leads the expedition. After a few days, however, they must abandon the tour and plan to return. But the team is arrested by British soldiers, as World War II has meanwhile broken out in Europe. After several escape attempts, Harrer and Aufschnaiter manage to flee from the prisoner camp in northern India over the Himalayas to Tibet. After months of wandering, they reach the holy Tibetan capital of Lhasa. After some time, the two mountaineers are tolerated by the local population. Aufschnaiter meets his future wife, the seamstress Pema (Lhapka Tsamchoe). Harrer is introduced to the 11-year-old Dalai Lama (Sonam Wangchuck), and a deep friendship develops between them.
