Japan in the 16th century: The once feared lord Hidetora Ichimonji decides to divide his realm among his three sons Taro, Jiro, and Saburo, appointing the eldest, Taro, as his successor. However, Saburo opposes this decision, accusing his father of building his empire on intrigue and prophesying that the family will be torn apart and perish. Hidetora banishes him, unaware of how right Saburo would turn out to be.

At the age of 75, legendary director Akira Kurosawa delivered another cinematic epic – and the most expensive Japanese film of all time up to that point. With visionary imagery and virtuoso editing, he tells a parable of greed for power, betrayal, and nihilism, cleverly combining an ancient folk tale with elements from Shakespeare's "King Lear." In 1986, the film was nominated for four Oscars, including Best Director, and won for Best Costume Design.
