The sixth graders at the Jose Urbina Lopez Elementary School in Matamoros are taken aback when the first lesson of their new teacher, Sergio Juarez (played by Latin mega-star Eugenio Derbez), begins. They are considered the lowest-performing students in Mexico, and their world is marked by violence, neglect, and corruption. The classroom atmosphere is one of harshness and discipline. However, Sergio chooses a different approach to help the students escape the dead end of hopelessness: he reaches out to the class with freedom and empathy to unleash their curiosity, potential, and perhaps even their genius. Sergio's unconventional curriculum, however, not only meets with surprised and bewildered faces from the children but also faces little acceptance and support in the teachers' lounge.
