Description: 1:35 S.L.C. Maiale 200 m. Crew. Crew (2) based on the experiences and successes of the Italian Regia Marina during World War I. In 1935, Teseo Tesei and Elios Toschi developed and perfected the Siluro a Lenta Corsa (S.L.C.), colloquially known as "Maiale" (Pig). This was a modified torpedo that allowed it to be steered underwater by two operators equipped with breathing apparatus. It was designed to carry a high-explosive warhead beneath the keel of enemy ships. The modified torpedoes had a limited speed, were equipped with a guidance system, and featured batteries that powered the electric motor, ensuring a range of 12-15 miles. The most notable action of these Italian naval attackers took place on December 19, 1941. Transported by the submarine "Scirè" to the heavily defended port of Alexandria, the S.L.C.s were able to attack the Royal Navy battleships H.M.S. Valiant and H.M.S. Queen Elizabeth, rendering them out of action for several months.
