The Basil Cathedral is a former church located on Red Square in Moscow, Russia. The building, which is now a museum, is officially known as the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos on the Moat or Pokrovsky Cathedral. It was constructed between 1555 and 1561 on the orders of Ivan the Terrible and commemorates the conquest of Kazan and Astrakhan. As a world-famous landmark, it has been the center of the city's growth since the 14th century and was the tallest building in the city until the completion of the Ivan the Great Bell Tower in 1600.
