The wandering preacher John Shepard (Tom Berenger) is a devout man with a dream of one day building his own church. To his dismay, he learns that his son Isaac (Greyston Holt) is nothing like him and is wanted for robbery and murder. Pastor Shepard decides to track down Isaac to save his soul, putting his own at risk. When he finally finds him, Isaac is hiding from cold-blooded men he has seriously crossed. Shepard proposes a deal: he will smuggle Isaac out of town, and in return, Isaac must join his father and his faith. Reluctantly, the young man agrees, and Shepard keeps his word: assuming that no one would suspect a criminal in a pastor's car, the mismatched father-son duo sets off.
