The model is a replica of the Elco 80 Torpedo Boat PRM Edition. During World War II, the US Navy deployed a large number of three types of motor torpedo boats: the Higgins, measuring 78 feet, and the ELCO, measuring 77 and 80 feet. Each model could be distinguished from the others, aside from length, configuration, armaments, and various other details. The 80-foot ELCOs represented the most numerous class: they were produced in five series, totaling about 300 units. They were constructed from mahogany and powered by three 1,350 hp Packard 4M-2500 engines (in the latest series upgraded to 1,500), easily exceeding 40 knots. The equipment and armaments were constantly updated and improved based on experiences gathered in the field and the evolving roles: as the conflict progressed, the PT boats actually shifted from their original task of attacking and disrupting traffic to taking on the role of gunboats and operating near the coast or in canals. The Italeri model reproduces the PT 596 and an 80-foot ELCO from the last production batch.
