Product details
The Rega received its first helicopter, the Bell 47-J, on February 28, 1957, after a fundraising campaign by the Swiss Consumers' Association. From 1968, the Agusta-Bell 206 Jet Ranger was in service, which was later replaced in the mountains by the Alouette III. In the Swiss Midlands, the Jet Ranger was replaced by the Bölkow BO 105 CBS. The Bölkow BO 105, designed with a rigid rotor head, was developed and built by Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm (MBB, later Eurocopter) in Germany. This twin-engine aircraft was not suitable for high-altitude operations and operated without a rescue winch. The Rega predominantly used it at the operational bases in Basel, Bern, and Zurich. In Zurich, there was no base in the modern sense; the Bölkow was stationed on the roof of the children's hospital. The crew was accommodated in an apartment in the neighborhood. They had to carry the kerosene for the helicopter in canisters up to the roof. Nevertheless, the helicopter was available for rescue missions day and night. Due to the frequent transport of newborns in incubators, the helicopter at the Zurich base was also referred to as the "Babyheli."
In 1990, the crew moved to new accommodations on the roof of the children's hospital. Due to space constraints, the temporary modular building with office and lounge areas was not located on the same roof as the helicopter; an external spiral staircase connected the base facilities with the helicopter landing pad. The Bölkow BO 105 CBS provided valuable service until February 1995, when it was replaced by the Agusta A 109 K2.
