The Saab JAS 39 Gripen entered service in the second half of the 1990s and represented a significant improvement over its predecessors, such as the long-serving Saab 37 Viggen fighter jet. The Swedish multirole combat aircraft and air superiority fighter Gripen was soon developed in a two-seat version to meet the demands of advanced pilot training. It essentially retained the excellent flight performance of the single-seater while offering greater operational flexibility, which also allowed for reconnaissance and ground attack missions. The interesting aerodynamic design, which ensured high maneuverability, the outstanding flying characteristics, a maximum speed of Mach 2.0, and the ability to carry a versatile and flexible payload also contributed to the aircraft's commercial success outside of Sweden.
