Hitler - The Last Ten Days

The film begins with a conversation between Adolf Hitler and Prof. Karl Gebhardt, whom he will appoint as the president of the Red Cross. This is followed by a backstory explaining how the Great Depression in Germany leads to Adolf Hitler being elected as Chancellor. After that, the opening credits roll, showing the advance and retreat of the Wehrmacht in the background. The actual film starts with Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels preparing a radio address for the so-called Führer's birthday on April 20, 1945. Shortly thereafter, Captain Hoffmann enters the Führerbunker where Adolf Hitler is located. The captain is asked to wait as the highest generals and politicians of the German Reich are congratulating Hitler on his birthday. Eva Braun, Adolf Hitler's mistress, is also introduced.

This elaborately produced feature film is the second attempt to reconstruct the days in the Führerbunker. The first feature film on this topic was presented by Georg Wilhelm Pabst in 1955 with "Der letzte Akt." The third attempt can be identified as the film "Der Bunker" (1981) featuring Anthony Hopkins in the role of Adolf Hitler. In 2004, Oliver Hirschbiegel revisited the topic with his film "Der Untergang.".
