For the World Exhibition and simultaneously to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution, Gustave Eiffel built the tower named after him in 1889. The construction took two years, from July 1, 1887, to March 31, 1889, when the tricolor flag was raised at the top. At its inauguration, the Eiffel Tower achieved phenomenal success, with two million visitors recorded. The Eiffel Tower was originally designed to last a maximum of 20 years. The color has been changed several times, from reddish-brown to ochre yellow and brown to bronze. It took 25 painters a year to completely paint it.
