Product details

This ship was built during the reign of Louis XV. It was constructed in 1756 in Rochefort according to the plans of Clairin-Deslaupiers. It belongs to the 74-gun ships and is notable for having its hull sheathed in copper. This practice of doubling the hull was not widely adopted until much later, starting in 1770. It allowed the hull, particularly the outer shell, to be protected from worms and other parasites. The Glorieux is equipped with 74 cannons, distributed as follows: 28 cannons of 36 pounds on the first deck, 30 cannons of 18 pounds on the second deck, and 16 cannons of 8 pounds on the forecastle. Like all 74-gun ships, the Glorieux did not have a mantelet on the second deck. Like all ships built in the early 18th century, the Glorieux had a bow with a rounded tip. In 1779, it was one of the ships that made up the Comte d'Estaing's Wing, also known as the Wing of America. It belonged to the Blue Squadron, whose flagship was the La Couronne.
