The planning of the C-118 began during World War II. The goal was to build a heavy version of the C-54 Skymaster for the U.S. Air Force. The first prototype flew for the first time on February 15, 1946. A total of 167 C-118 or R-6 0 Liftmaster aircraft were delivered to the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Navy.
