Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood takes place in Amestris, a world where alchemy and its reactions, known as transmutations, are part of everyday life. The population is governed by the state military from the capital, Central City. The armed forces include powerful alchemists, including the young Edward "Ed," who is supported by his brother Alphonse "Al" Elric. The two share a fateful history: Ed and Al broke an alchemical law in their childhood when they tried to resurrect their deceased mother using transmutation. As a result, Al's soul must continue to live in a suit of armor, and Ed's left leg and right arm are now made up of highly advanced prosthetics called auto-mails. The siblings join the state military in search of the legendary Philosopher's Stone, which is said to have the power to restore their original bodies. At just twelve years old, Edward becomes the youngest state alchemist in history and is thereafter known as the "Fullmetal Alchemist." The adventure that now begins for the two brothers is fraught with dangers...
