Forty carriages westwards

In 1867, the whiskey supply in the mining town of Denver is running low. Without replenishment, the miners face a harsh winter. Forty wagons loaded with high-proof spirits are set to remedy the situation. However, they must first make the long journey across the prairie. To ensure that the delivery reaches the town safely, the convoy is escorted by cavalry led by Colonel Gearhart (Burt Lancaster). The escort is urgently needed, as news of the valuable cargo leaks to the public, attracting the attention of other interested parties who soon spark a heated battle over the precious liquor.
