Ernst Leitz I (1843-1920) was one of the outstanding entrepreneurial personalities of the 19th century. Through pioneering innovations and the use of modern manufacturing methods, he developed the Leitz factories in Wetzlar into the world's largest manufacturer of microscopes. In doing so, he made history in the German economy and laid the foundation for the success of the later subsidiaries that emerged from his company: Leica Microsystems, Leica Camera, and Leica Geosystems.
