Ernst Leitz I

Ernst Leitz I (1843-1920) was one of the outstanding entrepreneurial personalities of the 19th century. Through pioneering innovations and the use of modern production methods, he developed Leitz-Werke in Wetzlar into the world's largest microscope manufacturer. In doing so, he wrote German economic history and laid the foundation for the success of Leica Microsystems, Leica Camera and Leica Geosystems, the subsidiaries that later emerged from his company.
