A master detective is always on duty: Hercule Poirot (Peter Ustinov) realizes this when he takes a vacation trip on the Nile. On board the luxury steamer is also the millionaire heiress Linnet Ridgeway (Lois Chiles), who booked the trip as a honeymoon with her newlywed husband Simon Doyle (Simon MacCorkindale) - only to end up as a corpse. Of course, Poirot immediately takes over the investigation and discovers that almost everyone had a motive. Chief among them is Simon, who comes from humble beginnings and had made a good match with Linnet - didn't he want to avoid waiting for his potential inheritance? Or author Salome Otterbourne (Angela Lansbury), who was sued for damages by the deceased. Mrs. Van Schuyler (Bette Davis) showed a striking interest in Miss Ridgeway's jewelry, as did the maid.
