The Patrol Boat, River (also known as Patrol Boat, Riverine or PBR) is a distinctive American boat from the Vietnam conflict, used for river patrols and transporting soldiers. Its features include a very shallow design, a fiberglass hull, and a water jet propulsion system that allowed it to navigate in shallow waters. The boat reached a top speed of 28.5 knots (53 km/h). The crew consisted of four soldiers, including a first-class petty officer as the ship's captain, a gunner, a mechanic, and a sailor. The boat compensated for its lack of armor with significant firepower. The equipment typically included a twin-mounted M2HB .50 caliber machine gun at the bow and a single M2HB at the stern. Additionally, the crew was equipped with a grenade launcher and a set of M16 rifles. There were also more powerful configurations. The boats were used by the US Navy until the 1990s and remain popular among civilians.
