The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt was the heaviest single-engine fighter aircraft of World War II and, along with the North American P-51, also the most produced American fighter plane of that era. Over 15,000 all-metal mid-wing aircraft were manufactured by the Republic Aviation Company from 1943 until the end of the war. The P-47 was primarily used as a fighter-bomber in the European theater, as its range was too limited for use as a long-range escort fighter, but its robustness and air-cooled radial engine made it well-suited for this role. It was rarely used in the Pacific theater due to its lack of range. The aircraft flew with great success in over half a million missions.
