Only in 1940, with the Macchi MC.202 Folgore, could the Kingdom of Italy restore its connection to fighter aircraft development in Europe. This was achieved by replacing the weak radial engine of the MC.200 Saetta with a Daimler-Benz DB 601 twelve-cylinder V-engine, which was later produced under license by Alfa Romeo and Fiat. With this change, the aircraft reached the level of modern fighter planes in terms of speed and altitude. However, since the armament was unchanged from the Saetta, the Folgore was the least armed fighter of its time. Nevertheless, the Macchi MC.202 proved itself in air battles over Africa and the Mediterranean. A total of about 1,150 units were built and deployed starting in 1941.
