Even before the entry into World War II, there were plans in the USA to modernize carrier-based fighter units. The Grumman F4F Wildcat, which bore the brunt of the fighting in the Pacific until about mid-1943, was to be replaced by a new fighter for the carrier fleet. The development of its successor, the Grumman F6F Hellcat, incorporated important experiences from air battles with the Japanese Mitsubishi A6M Zero in 1942, resulting in an aircraft that secured air superiority for the Americans in the Pacific.

The two versions, the F6F-3 with over 4,000 units and the F6F-5 with nearly 8,000 units (including the night fighter version F6F-5N), were produced in massive quantities and also supplied to allied nations. The aircraft delivered to the British were designated Hellcat 1 and Hellcat 2. Unlike the F4F Wildcat, the Hellcat was a low-wing monoplane, which allowed the landing gear to be moved from the fuselage to the wings, providing greater directional stability.

The F6F-3 was standardly armed with six 12.7 mm machine guns, while the F6F-5 could additionally carry 2 bombs or 6 rockets with a total weight of 907 kg. About three-quarters of all American air victories in the Pacific can be attributed to the Grumman F6F Hellcat.
