Cobi Church Sainte-M?re-Eglise

Sainte-Mère Église is a small French commune in Normandy, part of the Manche department. On the night of June 5 to 6, 1944, during Operation Overlord, the Allied landing on the French Channel coast, countless American paratroopers jumped over the commune. The parachutes of Private John Steele and his comrade Ken Russell from the 82nd Airborne Division became entangled in the tower of the Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption church. Steele hung from the church tower for about 2 hours, was freed by a German soldier, and then became a prisoner of war. The episode at the tower was featured in the 1962 film "The Longest Day," which led to Steele's current fame.
