Product details

The 38 cm Tiger assault mortar, also known simply as the Sturmtiger, was an artillery self-propelled gun used by the German Wehrmacht during the Second World War. Interestingly, its origins go back to an initiative of the German navy, which had a rocket launcher developed for land-based combat against submarines. The launchers were mounted on turntables and fortifications were built for this purpose. However, when the idea of placing the launcher with a range of 3000 metres on a self-propelled gun came up, a conflict arose with the army, which did not see the use of such a vehicle under naval command. Further development then took place under the leadership of the army, which further improved the launcher and had a suitable vehicle developed. This idea was submitted to General Inspector Heinz Guderian on 5 August 1943, who agreed on the condition that this project would not interfere with the production of the required tanks. The rocket-propelled submerged grenade of the navy was replaced by a projectile with an impact fuse to combat fortified positions. The ammunition of the vehicle, now known as the RW 61, underwent its own development, with the 38 cm rocket-propelled grenade 4581 with a range of over 5600 metres ultimately being chosen. For the self-propelled gun carriage, the hull of the Panzerkampfwagen VI Ausf. E 'Tiger' was chosen for practical reasons. While it was originally assumed that 10 Sturmtigers would be produced per month, this number was achieved in the period from April to September 1944. After that, a monthly production of 5 units was ordered, which was also never achieved. By the end of the war in 1945, just 18 Sturmmörser had been delivered to the Wehrmacht, with a total of 317 units of the 345 kg 4581 shell as ammunition. Model with 1100 parts, printed blocks and movable elements. Model dimensions (LxWxH):.
