This military and monastic order appeared in the Holy Land at the time of the Third Crusade, but focused on colonizing East Prussia, Poland and the Baltic countries, bringing Catholicism to the East. In 1199, Pope Innocent 3 gave them the white cloaks with a black cross, which became the badge of the Order. In 1242, the knights of the Order were defeated in the Battle of Lake Peipus by Alexander Nevsky, Prince of Novgorod.
