Captain Phillips describes in a highly nuanced way the hijacking of the US container ship Maersk Alabama by Somali pirates in 2009. The distinctive style of director Paul Greengrass makes the film both a gripping thriller and a complex portrait of the numerous consequences of globalization. At the center is the relationship between the commanding officer of the Alabama, Captain Richard Phillips (two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks), and the Somali pirate captain Muse (Barkhad Abdi), who kidnaps him. Phillips and Muse find themselves on an irreversible collision course as Muse and his crew target Phillips' unarmed ship. This leads to an extremely tense standoff, and the two men find themselves 145 miles off the Somali coast, at the mercy of forces beyond their control.
