Built in 1928 by the Burrard Dry Dock Company in North Vancouver, it was designed for Arctic waters and was the first ship to traverse the Northwest Passage from the Pacific to the Atlantic. In the summer of 1944, the St. Roch sailed from Halifax to Vancouver, becoming the first ship to navigate the North Pole region in both directions.
