In 1625, while Sweden was busy building an empire around the Baltic Sea, King Gustav II Adolf ordered the construction of new warships, including the Vasa. On its maiden voyage in 1628, the Vasa set sail and fired a salute. However, just a few minutes after departure, the ship began to lean. It briefly righted itself but then tilted again, and to everyone's shock and disbelief, the glorious and mighty warship suddenly sank.
