Product details
As part of a tender from the Austrian Armed Forces, Steyr Daimler Puch developed the one-ton off-road vehicle Pinzgauer in the late 1960s. However, the first major customer was the Swiss Army, which procured a total of approximately 6,300 vehicles starting in 1971. Of these, about 1,240 units were the 6x6 version. This large quantity resulted from the expansion of mechanized divisions at the time, as the strength of the Swiss militia army had risen to over 800,000 personnel.
The 6x6 variant had space for 2 people in the cabin and 12 people on the bridge, compared to 8 people in the 4x4 version. Due to its increased payload and high towing capacity, the 712M was often used as a towing vehicle for anti-aircraft guns, mine launchers, or missile launchers with an effective range of up to 7,000 meters.
