Product details
Developed in the late 1960s, the Tupolev TU-22M "Backfire" entered service with the Soviet Air Forces in the 1970s and can be considered an icon of the Cold War, partly due to its distinctive design. The "Backfire" is a twin-engine strategic bomber with variable-sweep wings, capable of carrying and deploying both nuclear and conventional weapons. As an advanced aircraft for its time, it represented a significant improvement over previous Soviet strategic bombers. With its two powerful engines mounted under the tail, the Tupolev bomber could reach speeds of Mach 1.9, posing a considerable threat to the air defenses of the USA and NATO countries. The "Backfire" was also specialized for conventional attacks against surface ships. Following the end of the Soviet Union, many TU-22Ms, with subsequent improvements in avionics and propulsion systems, were utilized by the Russian Air Force.
