The American twin-engine supersonic Grumman F-14 Tomcat was the iconic aircraft of the US Navy fighter squadrons in the 1980s and 1990s. It was characterized by its variable-sweep wing, twin tails, and two-seat tandem cockpit. The Tomcat boasted impressive operational performance data. With its two General Electric turbofan engines with afterburners, it could achieve a maximum speed of Mach 2.34. Equipped with a 20-mm M61 Vulcan rotary cannon, it could deploy a variety of weapon systems, including the AIM-9 Sidewinder, AIM-7 Sparrow, and the radar-guided long-range missile AIM-54 Phoenix. The F-14 was introduced in the 1970s, replacing the F-4 Phantom II to take on the role of air superiority fighter. Throughout its operational career, it participated in many military conflicts, from the Gulf of Sidra crisis to the Iraq War.
