The medium tank M4 Sherman was undoubtedly the most widely used armored vehicle during World War II. The M4 formed the backbone of the American armored forces and was produced in numerous versions and variants. The first example to go into large-scale production was the Sherman M4A1, characterized by its rounded hull and cast turret. The early Shermans were equipped with a 75-mm gun, which was later replaced by a high-velocity 76 mm gun. The Sherman M4A1 was commissioned in 1942 and equipped the armored units of the U.S. Army in the early months of the war. However, its true strength lay in its design. The Sherman was economical, reliable, and easy to produce in large quantities.
