Developed to provide fire support to the German infantry in accordance with the tactical concepts of Blitzkrieg, the Sturmgeschütz III evolved into new and advanced versions with varying mission profiles throughout the course of the war. On the Eastern Front, encounters with the strongest and most innovative Soviet tanks led to an expansion of its role, transitioning from supporting infantry units to effective anti-tank operations. With its simple and cost-effective design, it became one of the most produced vehicles of the German industry until the end of the war. The emergence of the "G" version, which specialized in the anti-tank role, also saw the introduction of the version equipped with a 105mm howitzer (Sturmhaubitze 42).
