Description: 1:35 M.A.S. 568 4a Torpedo Boat with Crew

Since the First World War, the Italian Regia Marina has focused on the development of small and rapid vessels generally armed with torpedoes. The moto torpedo boats, more commonly known as MAS, were civilian vessel variants. The results achieved during the First World War were remarkable, including the sinking of the Austro-Hungarian marine cruiser Wien and Szent István by Commandant Luigi Rizzo. The Italian Navy continued to improve the performance of these small but fast moto torpedoes, which were suitable for confined seas and shallow waters like the Adriatic Sea. The MAS 500, equipped with Isotta-Fraschini gasoline engines, was built during the Second World War and was more powerful and reliable. These boats were deployed as both moto torpedoes and anti-submarine platforms for dropping depth charges. Capable of reaching a top speed of 40 knots, they were armed with two 450mm torpedoes.
