Analyzing German tanks and the main opponents of the time, the British and Soviets, led to the development of a 26-ton tank. The new armored vehicle, which underwent several design changes over time, featured modern characteristics such as sloped front plates, a stronger and more powerful 420 HP diesel engine, and a main armament that was better suited for operational use with the introduction of the 75/34 Ansaldo gun. However, the P26/40, as the final name of the tank, retained some outdated solutions that had characterized the production of Italian armored vehicles since the mid-1930s: riveted armor and leaf spring suspension.
