After the outbreak of World War II, the U.S. General Staff ordered various manufacturers in 1940 to develop a lightweight multipurpose vehicle with four-wheel drive. The American Bantam Company, Willys Overland, and Ford Motor Co. stepped up to the challenge. A Willys prototype was chosen, which went into production after an initial run of 1,500 vehicles in early 1941, ultimately reaching a total production of 640,000 units. Of these, 277,000 units were produced by Ford under a licensing agreement. Thus, the Jeep became the most produced light vehicle of the war industry during World War II. Even 80 years later, the "Willys," with its distinctive shape, is still regarded as the four-wheeled light vehicle of the American army in World War II. Thanks to numerous collectors and enthusiasts, many well-preserved and fully functional "Willys" vehicles still exist today.
