The Japanese Maple 'Katsura', botanically known as Acer palmatum 'Katsura', is an exceptional shrub that captivates with its picturesque growth form and the vibrant colors of its leaves. Its flower clusters initially appear in a vivid red and later turn brown, while the creamy white petals create a beautiful contrast. From August onwards, the maple further adorns itself with brown or reddish, winged seeds that hang in pairs from the branches.
The growth of this Japanese maple is slender upright to broad bushy, well-branched, and compact. This growth form gives it a special elegance and makes it a true eye-catcher in any garden. The yellow-green, slightly twisted leaves are characteristic of this variety and possess five to seven lobes. In autumn, they turn a brilliant orange, making the shrub particularly striking during this season.
The Japanese Maple 'Katsura' is excellent for solitary planting in gardens or as a design element in rock gardens and Japanese gardens in a semi-shaded location. Its unique beauty also shines in rooftop gardens or as container planting.
In terms of care, the Japanese maple shows some sensitivity to extreme conditions. High heat and drought should be avoided, as they can be detrimental to the plant. Pruning is only necessary in exceptional cases, as the shrub is sensitive to cutting measures. If needed, pruning should occur only in August when the sap flow of the plant decreases, making it less susceptible. This way, the Japanese maple remains healthy and retains its characteristic shape.
Without further pruning, this plant can reach a height of 3 meters.
