At least the underside of the sensor must touch the substrate. Sensor rods must not extend into the drainage layer of the pot, if such a layer exists. Contact of the sensor rods with expanded clay or other drainage materials can lead to measurement errors. The length of the probe rods must be adjusted to the pot size so that the probe rods reach into the lower third of the pot.
