After some time, rust spots will appear on the soft iron bit. The horse enjoys the sweet taste of rust and will produce more saliva, which promotes better acceptance of the bit. The blue color of the bit gradually changes to gray/brown with visible rust spots on the mouthpiece. Clean the bit with a damp cloth, as the rust spots will turn orange. This can happen especially if the bit is temporarily not in use or stored in a damp place.
