This electric bike is a motorised bicycle with assisted pedalling up to 45 km/h and maximum motor power of 1000 watts. This type of electric bike falls under the category of mopeds and motorbikes that require a driving license (at least category M) and an insurance. In order to ride this kind of electronic bike, the following requirements must be fulfilled:
The bike must be equipped with a yellow license plate and insurance sticker. These can be obtained from the road traffic office (Strassenverkehrsamt) with the vehicle registration certificate provided. Since 2012, it is also mandatory to wear a helmet when riding fast electric bikes. In general, electric bike users must respect the same rules as cyclists and therefore use designated bicycle lanes.
