Do I need an adapter that is connected to the internet to have remote access or can I use the wall thermostat directly? And am I correct in assuming that the app is free and that there are no monthly fees? Greetings

Access to the internet/access point is required for remote control, but the thermostat also works with manual control.

Yes, you need the Homematic IP Access Point for the device to connect at all. The easiest way is to use the EQ-3 Access Point

And yes, there are no additional fees.
