Is that really silicone? I already have an older model, but it's made of plastic and very susceptible to limescale. Silicone would be great. But I doubt whether the article description is correct and silicone is right.

Can the drainer be placed on the left hand side of the sink rather than the right habd side as shown in the picture? Thank you

Yes - it can also be used on the left-hand side of the sink. The only difference would be that the basket for silverware would be towards the back of the left-hand-side of the rack (as shown in the first photo).
