Nachtmann Punk

London has long been known for its ability to challenge the status quo and bring a cheeky, quirky twist to innovation. This vibrant city inspired the young generation of emerging designers from Central Saint Martins, the partner of the NEXTGEN Design Competition 2017.

From the resulting designs, two winners were selected, including the cheekily abrasive PUNK by Anke Buchmann. The design, which is unique in glass design, coincides with the 40th anniversary of punk culture.

"In line with the punk movement, I wanted to rebel and break with the norm," explains Anke. "I started sketching some typical surfaces and patterns of punk, like studs and grids. From these literal translations of the central punk visuals, I developed a broader interpretation of the movement, allowing the attitude to shape the form. At the same time, I carefully researched Nachtmann's approach to textures and patterns to connect this with the punk style."

The series revitalizes the concept of traditional crystal household goods and marks their ongoing evolution into a modern and functional product. "In designing a bar set with areas that break out of the normal shape of the vessel, I left the ordinary behind. My punk attitude shattered the classic notion of crystal, creating a contrast between luxury and punk," emphasizes Buchmann.
