Plötulopi – Icelandic Plate Wool

Plötulopi (also known as plate wool) is a special, lightly spun yarn that is traditionally sold in flat plates weighing about 100 g. With a length of approximately 300 m per plate, Plötulopi is excellent for Icelandic sweaters and other rustic knitting projects.

Depending on the desired yarn thickness, two to three strands can be processed simultaneously: Two strands are roughly equivalent to the thickness of Lettlopi, while three strands are close to the classic Lopi quality.

Before knitting, the yarn should be carefully wound into a ball – for example, by combining strands from the center and the edge of the plate or by using multiple plates at once.

Since the yarn is unspun, it requires gentle handling during processing. If the thread does break, it can usually be easily reconnected and felted together thanks to the long fibers.

We particularly recommend Plötulopi for experienced knitters with a rather loose stitch pattern – because those who embrace this yarn will be rewarded with unique, lightweight, and yet warm knitted pieces.
