The legendary British Inspector Meredith swaps foggy London for the bright blue Côte d'Azur. A notorious counterfeiter is up to mischief there, a man he put behind bars years ago. But that's not all: there's also a murder under palm trees to be solved - in the mysterious Villa Paloma, of all places, which belongs to a wealthy British widow.

In this murder mystery, Inspector Meredith travels from the London fog to the glittering Côte d'Azur. Recently, the French coast has been flooded with counterfeit thousand-franc notes and the local police suspect an English mastermind as the head of the counterfeit money squad. And indeed, the banknotes appear to be the work of Chalky Cobbett, an English counterfeiter of notorious talent. But it's not just the counterfeit money that worries Meredith; a rich English widow who is hosting a whole series of mysterious house guests in her villa in picturesque Menton also arouses his interest. Not entirely unfounded, as it turns out, because shortly after the arrival of another guest from the British Isles, a murder takes place ...
