Recently, the French coast has been flooded with counterfeit thousand-franc notes, and the local police suspect an English mastermind as the head of the counterfeit money gang. And indeed: apparently the banknotes originate from Chalky Cobbett, an English counterfeiter of notorious talent. But it is not only the counterfeit money that worries Meredith; a rich English widow who hosts a whole series of mysterious house guests in her villa in picturesque Menton also arouses his interest. Not entirely unfounded, as it turns out, because shortly after the arrival of another guest from the British Kingdom, a murder occurs ... .
