Two years before his retirement, Maigret begins to take stock. He is particularly annoyed at not having solved a series of robberies of jewellery shops. Maigret suspects that Manuel Palmari, who has been gathering information for the commissioner in the underworld, is behind it. However, he lacks evidence. The man is in a wheelchair, cannot leave his flat and has no contact with anyone except his girlfriend Aline. Then Palmari is shot dead. And it does not remain with this one murder.
